| The Master said, "My doctrines make no way. I will get upon a raft, and float about on the sea." |
| 《·》: | 中天下而立，定四海之民，君子樂之，所性不存焉。 |
| To stand in the centre of the kingdom, and tranquillize the people within the four seas - the superior man delights in this, but the highest enjoyment of his nature is not here. |
| 《·》: | 凡四海之內九州，州方千里。 |
| Of the nine provinces embracing all within, the four seas, a province was 1000 li square. |
| 《·》: | 孝悌之至，通於神明，光於四海，無所不通。 |
| Perfect filial piety and fraternal duty reach to (and move) the spiritual intelligences and diffuse their light on all within the four seas. They penetrate everywhere. |
| 《》: | 浮滄海而知江河之惡沱也，況枯澤乎？ |
| Floating on the blue-green ocean, one knows the muddiness of the rivers, how much more that of the dried up marshes. |
| 《·》: | 凡回於天地之間，包於四海之內，天壤之情，陰陽之和，莫不有也，雖至聖不能更也。 |
| Every creature living between Heaven and earth and within the four seas partakes of the nature of Heaven and earth and the harmony of the Yin and the Yang. Even the greatest sages cannot alter this. |

| When the sea is moved (so as to bear it along), it prepares to remove to the Southern Ocean. |
| 《》: | 澹兮其若海，飂兮若無止，衆人皆有以，而我獨頑似鄙。 |
| I seem to be carried about as on the sea, drifting as if I had nowhere to rest. All men have their spheres of action, while I alone seem dull and incapable, like a rude borderer. |
| 《·》: | 是故無敵於海內。 |
| In this way, they have no rival in the four seas. |
| 《·》: | 匹夫隆之則為聖人，諸侯隆之則一四海者歟？ |
| 《·》: | 故疏河以導之，鑿江通於九派，灑五湖而定東海，民亦勞矣，然而不怨者，利歸於民也。 |
| 《·》: | 統此而舉之，德澤廣大，衍溢於四海，陰陽和調，萬物靡不得其理矣。 |
