256  | 劉宗周，字念臺，紹興人，辛丑進士。清介持正。崇禎初，起家順天府尹。策一蹇就道，其子徒步從之；至京，官服不備，市之店中。隨以忤旨被黜，即同子覓一小舟歸；人不知也。家居，倡「性命」之學於東南，海內有志之士多從之游；及門者多服布袍，市中布為之昂貴。後起總憲及吏部侍郎；召對，言詞切直，不合；求去。北京陷，公聞信，即赴杭勸巡撫都御史勤王，不允；跣足麻衣，欲舉哀。或以哀詔未至為言；公曰：『豈有子聞父喪，不躃踊理！詔至，再奉行可也』。弘光時，詔起；至南京，為左都御史。馬士英欲起魏黨阮大鋮，先一日詔百官「諫者罪之」。次日，大鋮命下，公即首疏極言不可；旋告歸。虜兵入浙，見祁虎子投於水，公曰：『安得如是便宜』！乃不食，二十日不死；心不死也。公門人王毓耆遣人持書詣公，見書不能言；使者候門外，久聞內哭聲起，則公逝矣。使者歸，則毓耆亦已投水死；蓋前書約公同殉節也。又周卜年、潘子成名宗，俱童子；從公死。公有「甲申慟哭詩」；又有「十自詩」，自呈、自求、自判、自鏡、自勖、自病、自慰、自詫、自勘、自白也。 |
