劉知幾史通·惑經篇》曰:「狄實滅衛,因桓恥而不書;河陽召王,成文美而稱狩。」濬師按:《春秋·僖二十八年》「天王狩于河陽」,傳曰:「是會也,晉侯召王,以諸侯見,且使王狩。仲尼曰:『以臣召君,不可以訓。』故書曰『天王狩於河陽』,言非其地也,且明德也。」杜注:「隱其召君之闕,欲以明晉之功德。河陽之狩,趙盾之弒,泄冶之罪,皆違凡變例,以起大義危疑之理,故特稱仲尼以明之。」蘇氏曰:「明晉侯之德,沒其召君,書天子之狩,顯其失地,便是褒諸侯、貶天子。所以然者,此亦假其失地之文,欲明王狩所在,非實貶也。若隱其召君,則全沒不書,於義為可。必書天王非地之狩者,若全沒其文,無以明晉侯尊崇天子之德,故書天子出狩,諸侯往朝。」蘇氏之意,與杜氏同。特兩家所論,尚有不盡當者。周室既衰,天子微弱,晉文帥九國之師,力圖霸業,不合諸侯,不足以取威,不尊天子,不足以正名。其不欲朝周者,非自嫌強大而不敢也,九國聚會于溫,設聲言朝周,一國不從,便損威重。莫若諷王出狩,以君就臣,遂使各國有不得不朝之勢,顯示以名義之正,而陰逞其威脅之私。左氏謂非其地,而又繼之以明德一語者,蓋諷王出狩,而自明其朝王之功德。若曰仲尼既諱為天王狩河陽矣,此而明正其非,不幾失夫子修《春秋》之旨乎?故曰「非其地也,且明德也」,委婉其辭,褒貶自見。杜氏明晉之功德,與蘇氏明晉侯尊崇天子之德,皆不能體會入微也。黃東發引木訥之言,以為河陽之狩非晉文召王,則舉三傳皆不足信矣。桓譚《新語》:「秦始皇見周室失統,自以當保有九州,見萬民碌碌,猶群羊聚豬,皆可以竿而驅之。」襄王之世,非東周以後可比。而齊、魯、宋、蔡、陳、鄭各國,又非晉文所可竿而驅之者,不得已而作挾天子令諸侯之舉。河陽一出,有以知晉文之用心矣。善乎伊川先生之言,曰:「晉文公欲率諸侯以朝王,正也。懼其不能,故譎以行之,召王以就焉。人獨見其召王之非,而不見其欲朝之本心,是以譎而掩其正也。」
