字子充，其先鄭州人，以祖宦廬陵，遂家焉。紹興二十年進士，試館職，高宗讀其策，曰：「掌制手也」。由祕省正字除監察御史。孝宗踐祚，遷起居郎。上曰：「朕舊見卿文，當以近作進覧」。尋權中舎侍經筵，兼權給事中。封駁不避貴倖，請祠去。久之，提刑福建，召除秘少領史、職草國書使，金稱上意曰：「此大才也」。尋權兵、禮二侍兼直學，同修國史，以論張說。出知建寧府，至豐城，稱疾而歸，三請祠，其名益重。久之，起兵侍，再兼直學，拜叅知政事，俄知密院。淳熙十四年，拜右丞相。明年，遷左丞、許國公。光宗即位，拜少保、益國公。慶元初，三上表引年，遂以少傅致仕。薨，年七十有九，諡文忠，自號平園老叟，集二百卷，著書八十一種。曹能始訐其詩未脫詞科，習氣信然。
