廣明元年正月，侯昌業上疏極諫，賜死。《續寶運録》云：司天少監侯昌業上疏，其略曰：「陛下不納李蔚、杜希敖之諫，又曰：臣乃明祈五道暗祝㝠官，悚息於班列之中，願早過於閻浮之世。又曰：受爵不逢於有徳之君，立㦸每佐於無道之主。又曰：不望堯舜之年，得同先帝之日。又曰：明取尹希復指揮，暗策王士成進狀，強奪波斯之寶貝，抑取茶店之珠珍，渾取匱坊全城般運，又曰：莫是唐家合盡之嵗，為復是陛下夀足之年。又曰：伏惟陛下蹔停戯賞救，接蒼生於殿內，立掲諦道塲，以無私財帛，供養諸佛，用資世祿，共力攘災表奏，聖上，龍威震怒，侍臣驚悸。宣徽使宣云：侯昌業付內侍省候進㫖。翌日午時，又內養劉季逺宣口敕云：侯昌業出自寒門，擢居清近，不能修慎妄奏，閑詞訕謗，萬乘君王，毀斥百辟卿士，在我彛典，是不能容，其侯昌業宜賜自盡」。北夢瑣言曰：「唐自廣明後，閹人擅權，置南北廢置使，軍容田令孜有回天之力，中外側目，而王仙芝、黄巢剽掠江、淮，朝廷憂之。左拾遺侯昌業上疏極言時病，留中不出，命於仗內戮之。後有傳侯昌業疏詞不合事體，其末云：「請開掲諦道埸以銷兵厲」。似為庸僧偽作也。必若侯昌業以此識見犯上，宜其死也」。今從之。
