論曰：先大夫宣侯沈約宋書曰：「范泰字伯倫。祖汪。父甯，宋高祖受命，拜金紫光祿大夫，加散騎常侍，領國子祭酒，多所陳諫。泰博覽篇籍，好為文章，愛獎後生，孜孜無倦。薨謚宣侯。」即曄之父也。甞以講道餘隙，寓乎逸士之篇。至高文通傳，輟而有感，以為隱者也，因著其行事而論之曰：「古者隱逸，其風尚矣。潁陽洗耳，恥聞禪讓；許由隱於潁陽，聞堯欲禪，乃臨潁而洗耳。孤竹長飢，羞食周粟。伯夷、叔齊，孤竹君之子，不食周粟。或高棲以違行，或疾物以矯情，雖軌迹異區，其去就一也。若伊人者，志陵青雲之上，身晦泥汙之下，心名且猶不顯，況怨累之為哉！與夫委體淵沙，鳴弦揆日者，不其遠乎！」委體泉沙謂屈原懷沙礫而自沈也。鳴弦揆日謂嵇康臨刑顧日景而彈琴也。論者以事迹相明，故引康為喻。
