Part of the Treatise on Calligraphy

Sun Guoting (孫過庭) (646–691) or Sun Qianli (孫虔禮), was a Chinese calligrapher of the early Tang Dynasty, remembered for his cursive calligraphy and his Shu Pu (書譜, "A Narrative on Calligraphy" or "Treatise on Calligraphy" (ca. 687)). The work was the first important theoretical work on Chinese calligraphy, and has remained important ever since, though only its preface survived. The preface is the only surviving calligraphic work of Sun, therefore it is responsible for both Sun's reputation as an artist and as a theorist. The original handscroll can be seen at the National Palace Museum, in Taipei, Taiwan, and on its web site.

孫過庭（646年 - 691年），字虔禮，自稱吳郡人，一說富陽（今杭州市富陽區）人（漢及三國時富陽屬吳郡），一說陳留人。歷任右衛胄曹參軍、率府錄事參軍，陳子昂為他撰寫墓誌銘：「四十見君，遭讒慝之議」，說他很有才華，並有大志，但生平不得意。因暴病于洛陽植業里客捨去世。

孫過庭擅長書法，工楷書、行書和草書，尤其是他的草書學習王羲之，筆法精熟，在唐代首屈一指，唐高宗曾經評價他「過庭小字足以迷亂羲、獻」；陳子昂為他寫的墓誌銘說：「元常既歿，墨妙不傳，君之遺翰，曠代同仙」，把他比作鍾繇；唐代的《續書評》提到他：「過庭草書如懸崖絕壑， 筆勢勁健」；宋代的《宣和書譜》說他：「得名翰墨，間作草書咄咄逼羲獻，尤妙于用筆」。

他的傳世作品為垂拱三年（公元687年）自己親自書寫創作的《書譜》，原為兩卷，傳到明代時被嚴嵩裝訂為一卷，後被清宮收藏，並作為書法理論著作收入《四庫全書》，原本現藏臺北國立故宮博物院。

另外有傳為他書寫的草書《千字文》，是後世的仿本，現藏于中國遼寧博物館。

孫過庭不僅是書法家，還是具有重大意義的書法理論家，為中國的書法理論奠定了基本框架。他認為書法內容是隨著時代而興起的，形式是因為世俗而變化的。他主張書法風格應融合各種風格兼取其長。從哲學角度分析了書法創作的變易關係。

孫過庭草書中的許多字都成為現在漢字簡化的楷模，例如孙，书，谱，际，继，等簡化字都是孫過庭創造的。
