臣瓚是西晉人，僅知其名，不知姓氏。臣瓚是《漢書》的註解家，撰有《漢書集解音義》二十四卷。至劉宋時已無人知其真正姓名。姚察《漢書訓纂》以為臣瓚即傅瓚，酈道元《水經注》以為是薛瓚，朱希祖以為臣瓚即是裴瓚。孟森著有《臣瓚考》認為臣瓚為即薛瓚。胡適著有《注〈漢書〉的薛瓚》，結論與孟森同。洪業著有《再論臣瓚》。
